Hi Duarte,
Thanks a lot for your comments and suggestions. Internally, we discussed the ways that we could provide and improve our user support and interaction earlier this year and specifically discussed whether we should move the Ensembl-dev mailing list to a forum or other platform. At the moment we are staying the with mailing list and expanding some of our user interaction and outreach via the methods that Dan described (our blog, videos and, indeed, Facebook). However, we recognise some of the limitations of the mailing lists and the opportunities that you brought up.
We plan to continue to explore that ways that we interact with the people that want to use Ensembl data, tools and code. The basics are those that this thread has identified: ease of use, discoverability and providing things that people want.
I suspect that we always will (or at least for a long time) offer a mailing list for those people that want to use this format, but this is not the only thing now and certainly won't be the only option in the future.
Paul

That is one of the standard features tools like DISQUS provide as standard. However this type of discussion list would provide a much better web experience than what we currently get.

I would expect at least to be able to download an valid HTML document with the mail list content tree.

If you think about it we all are working in the same field and it is a good way of building up your connections. I know there are other places to this (LinkedIn, google plus and others) but I do find appealing to learn a bit about the people I am talking to and an integrated profile is a good way of accomplishing this.

From the developer's point of view, email is better than having to go to a particular site or other web page, and it's far better than having an instant messaging or #irc window pop up while you're trying to think.
