Dear Volker and Hiram,

Yes, there actually is. The ftp.ensembl.org server also acts as rsync server.

Please use the following command to find your way round. Admittedly, this is something we need to advertise and especially document better. 

rsync rsync://ftp.ensembl.org/ensembl
