We have an exciting opportunity at the EBI for team leader
position for the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) - the team
which handles archival DNA storage from short reads to assemblies.
With the advent of new technology, this important component of
the biomolecular data storage is becoming even more critical
in a larger set of contexts.

Team Leader at the EBI is the "Principle Investigator" level for
the service teams. A successful candidate would have considerable
resources allowing him or her to discharge their service function
and support from myself and others in writing competitive grants
for areas of development around the service. In addition we can
consider a candidate that wishes to continue with some pure research
as long as that candidate can clearly discharge the service role.

We would also consider more junior candidates who we would appoint
to a "Coordinator" position for 1 or 2 years, and then be assessed
to take on a complete Team Leader position. This would allow a
promising junior candidate without, for example, extensive management
experience to have a path to a complete Team Leader position.

The closing data is 5th of September.

The advert is posted below in this email; I'd be delighted to answer
any informal inquiries by email or phone - email me at birney at ebi.ac.uk

Job Advert:

We are looking for an enthusiastic, visionary leader with a strong
biological background and clear demonstrable experience in the field
of bioinformatic databases to head the European Nucleotide Archive
(ENA) team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on
the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The position requires both technical leadership in the running of a
complex database and strategic scientific leadership in the general
areas of use of DNA information to the molecular biology community.
The team leader will be expected to form external collaborations and
raise funds via competitive peer review grants.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is
a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the
scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and
representation. The ENA is a core component of this mission, with
responsibility of EMBL-Bank, the peer of GenBank and DDBJ, the
European component of the SRA, storing both long and short (next
generation sequencing) reads and the associated submitted annotation
and meta-data on this DNA sequence.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants will have a PhD in a biological science or PhD in another
science and must have more than 5 years experience in direct biology.
The ideal candidate must have the ability to provide overall technical
leadership and clear participation in a large scale bioinformatics
project. Whilst a high level of proficiency is not required, the
ability to manage a technical program is, and programming and
technical skills will be highly beneficial. The candidate will have
proven ability of managing a complex team and complex international
collaborations.

Excellent English language, communication and interpersonal skills are
a prerequisite for this post.

For a suitable candidate we would be able to directly appoint to this
leadership position. We will also consider candidates who have less
direct management experience but can show clear vision and enthusiasm
in this area. For such a candidate we would consider appointing at a
lower level with a two year program of mentoring and developing to
allow such candidate to realise their potential in a leadership
position.
