Thanks, that is very helpful!  Just one clarification - is there a reference listing which properties are included in the cache and which are excluded?
I guess ideally the API would be able to handle it transparently - if something is not included in the cache, it would fall back to the db if possible.  And hopefully warn the user that there may be performance hits and the plugin will not work properly in --offline mode.
