Job Description

We are looking for two talented and motivated Perl developers to join
the Core team in the Ensembl Project at the European Bioinformatics
Institute (EBI) which is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus
near Cambridge in the UK.

The Ensembl Core Team is responsible for the development and
maintenance of the Ensembl Core database schema and the Ensembl Core
Perl API which serves as the basis for the Ensembl website and
annotation pipelines and is also widely used by external users. Other
Core team tasks include:

    * Playing a key part in the Ensembl release cycle.
    * Working with the other Ensembl teams as well as with external
users to make our software as usable and efficient as possible.
    * Collaborating with international projects on and off campus.
    * User support and training.

The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)
provides cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of
bioinformatics. Ensembl is one of the groups at the EBI and a leader
in genome annotation.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should hold a Masters degree or higher in Computational
Science or Physical Science or a PhD in Biological Science. It is
essential that the successful candidate has previous experience of
working in a large project and with working in close collaboration
with fellow team members.  (S)he should also have the ability to carry
out specific personal responsibiliies and must be able to work to
tight deadlines. Previous experience of working with large codebases
and with systems which process large quantities of date would be a
distinct advantaqe.

The software developers must have strong programming skills in Perl
and experience in development of SQL databases, in particular MySQL.
Experience in other programming/scripting languages would be an
advantage, as would some knowledge of molecular biology and/or
bioinformatics. The developers should be comfortable developing
software in a primarily Unix-based environment, and be familiar with
development tools such as CVS.

We are looking for highly motivated developers with good communication
and interpersonal skills. Furthermore, candidates should demonstrate
solid problem solving skills, excellent attention to detail, and a
desire to work in an international environment. Good English language
skills are a requirement.
